Rhapsodina City

Raps_2

Young Jason Rupert, heir to the self-made tycoon Wilson Rupert’s fortune, one day demands his inheritance.   He wants it immediately and fakes a wild, dramatic row with both his parents to get what he wants.  Being the apple of both their eyes, his parents capitulate and allow him to take the money and have the freedom to spend it.  The protagonist proceeds to Rhapsodina City to test his mettle and use his money as he sees fit.

Rhapsodina is a true cosmopolis where the best and the worst of society are mixed (or tossed) “salad-like” into an unforgettable experience.  Like all great cities, Rhapsodina has both a character and a siren-like seductiveness that lures many – charming them into staying, to live out a destiny (good or bad) subsumed to the city’s continued progress.  The city, like Rome, is built on seven hills and is spiritually divided into Rhapsodina Modern (where the rich circulate) and Old Rhapsodina (otherwise known as The Paradise of Hoodlums), which is composed of all of the poor.   As the novel builds the psychological and philosophical bases for its telling, one begins to see a side of Jason that is a cipher of what his father once was – a poor, ambitious young man who survived and did many things to climb the social apex of their society.

One begins to wonder how Jason came to choose a life of dangerous gambles.  His character is naturally bent towards being tempted – his interior dialogue may sometime seem like that of a man contemplating a crime that would get him what his heart desires.  But some secret power could be manipulating his destiny.  It could be his father.  Or it could be his father’s old enemy.  Or it could be the city itself, playing the role of games master on its bedazzled denizens.  Jason throws himself unafraid into the wheel of chance and experiences the tides of fortune good and bad, growing into his character’s latent strengths.  Will he be the man he wants to become?  Or the man that history, his parentage, and Rhapsodina have meant him to be?
